ABOUT THE SERVICE TODAY

This is the Sunday when we think of the transfiguration of Jesus.  This is when he showed his disciples and us the glory that he has in heaven and the power and might he has as God’s Son.  The readings will in one way or another deal with this transfiguration and transformation that occurs when we get close to our God.

The First Lesson  is from 2 Kings 2:1-12.  This is the poignant story of Elijah being taken to heaven and Elisha his student being left behind.  Elisha said to his teacher and mentor Elijah, “As surely as the Lord lives, I will not leave you.”  But it had to happen and life went on after it did happen.  Elijah was one of two people in the whole history of the world who didn’t die but was taken bodily into heaven straight from this earth.

The Second Lesson is from 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2.  These words tell us that our God wants us to be “transformed” and not to be “conformed.”  This transformation happens when we spend time in God’s presence.  Moses had this happen.  We will have a certain transformation happen in our lives too if we spend time in Jesus’ presence.  This will provide the text for the Bible study.

The Gospel for the Sunday is Mark 9:2-9.  This is the account of the Transfiguration.  What great words are in verse 8 for us all, “Suddenly, when they looked around they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.”  The sermon will be from these words of Mark.

There will be a devotion/service at Georgetown Living today.  The service today begins at 11:45.

This week begins Lent.  This Wednesday evening will be the first of the Lenten services.  The service begins at 7:00.  Pastor Hartzell and Pastor Koester from Temple will be alternating in serving both of the churches for these special services.  Starting a week from Wednesday evening there will be soup suppers served before the service, starting at 6:00.  Please make these services part of your preparations for Easter this year.  The theme of the services this year is “The Sign of Jonah.”  The texts will be from Jonah and his life and work.  You will also have a chance to hear the entire story of Jesus’ suffering and death in responsive readings.  Please come!

There will be Bible study Thursday morning at 10:00.  We are continuing our study of the book of Revelation.  This Thursday we will be finishing up Chapter 3 and the last three of the seven churches.    (We didn’t finish up Chapter 3 this past week as announced.)

Please put February 26 (next Sunday) on your calendar.  Hannah Jett is going to be received into our congregation in confirmation during the regular worship service that day.  It will be a special day and a special service. You will have the chance to review your own confirmation promises.  Please come and support Hannah by your presence and your prayers for her.  She has worked hard to get to this place in her life of faith.  Please come and encourage her on her confirmation day.

There was a Church Council meeting this past Sunday afternoon.  Our treasurer, Matt Stump, reported that our church was able to pay a considerable amount off the principal on our mortgage above our normal mortgage payments.  This tremendous thing happened through special gifts from our own church members as well as others outside our membership who love our congregation.  (These “others” are WELS members from other WELS congregations.)  This special payment to the mortgage will possibly equal a year’s payments over the course of our mortgage repayment.  To God be thanks!  Another item discussed was to support Pastor Hartzell’s attendance at a special week long Hebrew seminar in July in Mequon, Wisconsin.  The Church Council is looking into possibly replacing the 30 year old oven and microwave in the parsonage. It was reported that the work was completed on the fascia of the church and everything looks good and will now be good for years to come.

Next week on Sunday…

Genesis 22:1-18 will be the First Lesson for this next Sunday which will be the first Sunday in Lent.  This section of Scripture is about Abraham being asked to sacrifice his one and only son Isaac on Mount Moriah (Jerusalem).  Abraham believes God.  Abraham does what God says.  At the last moment God “provided” a sacrifice in place of Isaac.  God would provide another sacrifice one day on this same mountain.  It would be his Son Jesus who would die for the sins of all people.  The Bible study this next Sunday will explore the faith of Abraham and God’s wonderful promise to “provide” for us.

The Second Lesson is Romans 8:31-39.  What a wonderful word it is!  It tells us that God provides his Son for us all.  These words promise us that nothing will get in the way of God’s plan for saving us.  Nothing will ever happen to us that God in his wisdom and love doesn’t allow to happen.  All things will work for our good and our benefit.  That’s what our God says here!  The sermon will come from this section of Romans 8.

The Gospel for the day will be Mark 1:12-15.  This speaks of Jesus’ temptation by the devil.  It also speaks of Jesus’ first work of preaching the “good news.”  (The word Gospel means “Good News.”)
